On this day, 21 March, we are grievously reminded of the mistakes of our past. That acceptance and humbleness are still vital ingredients to a good life recipe, a good nation. On 21 March 1960, people mercilessly died, and 180 were injured. Police discharged fire on peaceful masses of colour, gathered in a demonstration to brave the deeply rooted injustices in society.
The theme, The year of Charlotte Maxeke, pays tribute to the 150th anniversary of the birth of liberation struggle heroine and human rights campaigner Ms Charlotte Maxeke. Known for being the first black woman to graduate with a university degree in South Africa. She believed that we are a people united by rights.
Human Rights demands the renewal of our convictions about ourselves, others, our community and the commitment to respect one another. Our generation has a special responsibility to move South Africa beyond the suffering we hold dearly onto, turn a page in the country’s struggle, and chart a new direction. This is the work of life for ourselves and generations to come.
The year of unity, socio-economic renewal, and nation-building is personal for South Africans. We continue to strengthen our nation and course-correct the path to fight for social justice and foster inclusion.
